A Flexible Approach to Estimating Production Functions When Output Prices are Unobserved∗

چکیده

There exists significant price dispersion in many industries. As a consequence the value of output is not necessarily a good measure of the quantity of output. Estimation of production functions for these types of goods is thus challenging since quantities and prices of output are typically not separately observed by the econometrician. This paper provides a new flexible approach for estimating production functions which treats quantity and prices for output as latent variables. To illustrate the usefulness of the techniques we consider two applications. The first application focuses on estimating production functions for housing. The empirical analysis is based on a comprehensive database of recently built properties in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The second application focuses on the car repair service industry based on a unique survey conducted by the leading magazine that covers this industry. We find that the new methods proposed in this paper work well in these applications and provide reasonable estimates for the underlying production functions. JEL classification: C51, L11, R12

Estimating Differentiated Goods Oligopoly Models with Market Share and Cost Data

In this paper, we propose a methodology of jointly estimating the demand and cost functions of the differentiated goods oligopoly models when there are both data on demand and cost of firms. An important characteristics of the method is that it deals both with endogeneity of prices from the unobserved quality term, and the endogeneity of output in the cost function from the unobserved cost shoc...

Improving envelopment in data envelopment analysis by means of unobserved DMUs: an application of banking industry

In data envelopment analysis, the relative efficiency of a decision making unit (DMU) is defined as the ratio of the sum of its weighted outputs to the sum of its weighted inputs allowing the DMUs to freely allocate weights to their inputs/outputs. However, this measure may not reflect a the true efficiency of a DMU because some of its inputs/outputs may not contribute reasonably in computing t...

Estimating Price Elasticities with Non-Linear Errors in Variables∗

This paper estimates a price elasticity using a flexible demand specification on survey data where prices are observed with error are correlated with household characteristics. The demand function is modeled as being a polynomial (and more generally also including trigonometric terms) in the unobserved true prices and the form of the dependency between the observed (mismeasured) prices and hous...

Instrument-free Identification and Estimation of Differentiated Products Models using Cost Data∗

This paper proposes a methodology for jointly estimating the demand and cost functions of differentiated goods oligopoly models when demand and cost data are available. The method deals with the endogeneity of prices to unobserved product quality in the demand function, as well as the endogeneity of output to unobserved cost shocks in firms’ cost functions. Our method does not, however, require...

Scheduling of flexible manufacturing systems using genetic algorithm: A heuristic approach

Scheduling of production in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) has been extensively investigated over the past years and it continues to attract the interest of both academic researchers and practitioners. The generation of new and modified production schedules is becoming a necessity in today’s complex manufacturing environment. Genetic algorithms are used in this paper to obtain an initial...
